Mums-to-be may notice certain skin changes, beginning first trimester of pregnancy. These skin conditions require adherence to an effective skin care schedule during pregnancy. Changes in skin during pregnancy are a normal phenomenon caused due to hormonal changes taking place within the body. Being well informed about the essential elements related to skin care helps in adopting a safe and effective skin care regime that is suitable for your skin especially during pregnancy.
Pregnancy skin care problems:
- Acne
- Pimply eruptions
- Linea Nigra
- Dry itchy abdomen
- Skin tags
- Spider veins
- Varicose veins
- Red or itchy palms
- Stretch marks
- Chloasma
Cleansing Care
Start with a gentle cleanser, morning and night. For normal skin dermatologists recommend using a non-residue or glycerine-based facial cleanser. If your skin is ultra dry, then you should use a soapless rinse-off cleanser that’s mild and moisturising. If acne breakouts are particularly bad, use an antibacterial cleanser, but check the ingredients first.
Avoid any cleansers (as well as any moisturizers or cosmetics) containing chemical exfoliants such as salicylic, glycolic, and alpha or beta hydroxyl acids – especially during the first trimester. Instead, use mechanical exfoliant products to remove any dead skin. If after the first trimester your breakouts are still frequent, consult your obstetrician about what products may be safe to introduce. Once cleansed, use a mild astringent toner, but, again, check the ingredients.
Moisturizers and Sun Protection
The most important addition you should make to your skin-care routine during pregnancy is a good quality moisturiser. The turnover of skin cells accelerates during pregnancy, so it demands regular moisturisation. Obviously, your choice will ultimately depend on the current needs of your skin: if it’s dry, go for richness; if it’s greasy, choose a lighter formula.
Whether your skin is dry or oily, always choose a moisturiser with at least SPF 15 and with broad spectrum protection that works against both UVA and UVB rays. During pregnancy, elevated hormone levels trigger the multiplication of pigment cells, which can cause chloasma, a brown patchy discolouration on the facial skin known as the mask of pregnancy, which usually fades shortly after birth.
Acne and Oil
If your skin is oily and/or acne prone, you'll probably experience your worst breakouts during the first trimester of pregnancy. The safest way to treat these breakouts is with a product that contains glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, topical erythromycin, or witch hazel. Acne is skin care problem that occurs in pregnancy due to the fluctuation of hormones. Treatment for acne should be done carefully, by avoiding products that get absorbed in the blood stream and may affect the baby. Make sure you choose products that contain safe ingredients for pregnancy and lactation periods.
Dry Skin
Dry skin during pregnancy is usually brought on by a loss of bodily fluids. That’s because your body is quite literally sucking you dry so that it can provide all the necessary hydration for your baby’s development. In fact, because your need for bodily fluids are increasing so much, it is nearly impossible to keep up, leading to dehydration on your skin and extremities. So in addition to your skin care routine, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water – 8 glasses a day.
Stretch marks
However, the most common skin problem pregnant women suffer from is stretch marks. In such cases, use of a pregnancy skin care product, such as the stretch mark minimiser or tummy toner, will be most beneficial to regain the original skin texture. Stretch marks can also be avoided by applying some pregnancy safe essential oil in stretch prone areas like stomach, thighs, breasts and buttocks. As this oil is rich with Vitamins A, D, E and other essential oils, the skin gets soft and hydrated and the skin’s elasticity is enhanced. Using some vitamin E body lotion along with this oil helps in better pregnancy skin care as the skin remains supple and soft.
Quick and Easy Makeup
When it comes to wearing makeup during pregnancy, stick with the less-is-more philosophy. It's faster and easier. All you really need to put your best face forward are few multipurpose products. A foundation stick that doubles as concealer is great for covering under-eye circles and blemishes, and for evening out skin tone. Chubby pencils are foolproof for smudging on eyes, lips, and cheeks, and they won't take up much room in your bag. If you're the kind of person who won't leave the house without lipstick, make sure it's moisturizing and contains sun protection. For a polished look, finish up with a coat of washable, waterproof mascara and you're ready for the day.
